Center Line, Michigan

For over 100 years, the area where Center Line, Michigan, sits was left alone by settlers. It’s kind of strange, considering the surrounding area was being settled by Irish, German, French, and Belgium immigrants. The reason, though, was simple. The French spread rumors that the area was a snake-infested swamp to protect their fur trade. Travelers went miles around the area to avoid it up until the 1820s. When available land around the area became scarce, brave souls took to the swamp and drained it, cleared the trees, and found a new home.

The city was named after the area between 2 Potawatomi Indian trails that led from Fort Detroit and exists today as Sherwood Avenue. Center Line’s 8500 or so residents live on just 1.7 square miles, which is one of only forty cities that are entirely surrounded by another city (Warren.) This came to be because residents of the area wanted to guarantee that their little slice of Michigan wouldn’t burn to the ground in a fire and incorporating as a city was the only way to raise taxes and buy a fire truck.

This small city is a tight-knit group, exemplified by the Center Line Festival Foundation. The highlight of the year is the Independence Festival. Festivities include an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast, antique car show and parade, 5k run, live music, carnival games, and helicopter rides. The Foundation keeps the city entertained throughout the year with events like the beer fest, Halloween Town, and a softball tournament.

For fun that can last a lifetime, stop by the Dance Scene. For almost 50 years, residents have been learning the art of ballroom and Latin dance. They offer private and group lessons, have dance parties and events, and can choreograph your wedding dance.

Keeping the city connected is the Center Line Parks & Recreation department. Founded in 1940 and with a motto of “Small Town Lifestyle In The Heart Of Metro-Detroit,” the department offers events like movies in the park, July 4th fireworks, and trips. There are also softball leagues, summer camps, and a game room, including bumper pool, air hockey, ping pong, shuffleboard, and more. They also offer transportation for the disabled and elderly. Some are free and can be arranged for as little as a $2 one-way donation.

Since 1985, locals have been dining at Vern Haney’s Restaurant, Trip Advisor’s #1 rated Center Line place to eat. Specialties include the 5th Degree Grilled Cheese, the Cherry Chicken Croissant, and the Big-Stuffed Muffin.

If some adult entertainment is on the menu, then check out Sandbaggers Bar and Grill. Golf, Pool, and Dart leagues, Paint Party events, and a classic car show every Wednesday are available. There are also charity events held throughout the year.
